for joining us. one east bay neighborhood is waking up to closed streets, construction equipment and a watery mess. terry mcsweeney joins us live from pleasant hill with the latest on a frustrating water main break. what we call breaking news. terry? >> double breaker. broke eight days ago, broke last night here near cay cay way. they've still got the water coming out of the ground here. they say they're doing that to stabilize the pressure and they do have water back to the 40 homes and 100 plus people who were without water, again, since about 7:30 last night. not news to the people out here. it was eight days ago, the very same pipe broke in a different spot but the very same pipe broke. they were without water yet again. crews have come out. they have circumvented the break and getting water to the homes. the street though is in a very, very interesting location. four schools are located near here, including diablo valley college. so in about an hour or so, students start walking, parents start driving their kids to school and this becomes a very busy street. they hope to have the street
that fog out there. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. california voters have a clearer picture today of their two main choices for governor. last night democratic jerry brown and republican meg whitman drew a sharp contrast in their first of three debates. >> even though their styles are different, the two actually have several things in common. candidate jerry brown and meg whitman went into their debate in a virtual tie and came out virtually the same way. the polls have yet to be released. on the issues they also agree. both would protect colleges and universities from higher fees. both would enforce the death penalty. the debate lasted just under an hour at u.c. davis. the first question was how they would fix california's dysfunctional budget. >> first of all you gotta live within your means. i mean, they started spending money, we had a boom and wall street was going and dot-com and all that, then it collapses. well, you gotta reset. reset 15%, 18%. i authorized by my legal opinion an 18% reduction in the governor's salary, the legislators' salary and my
! happy friday, everyone! it's 5 a.m.. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. pg&e is investigating the intriguing and frightening possibility that microbes inside a gas pipe may have caused the deadly san bruno explosion two weeks ago. sounds incredulous but it's happened before. jenelle has details. >> yes, it has, kristen. ten years ago in the new mexico desert, the pipeline ruptured killing 12. investigators found pitting in the pipeline. the corroded area spread across 21 feet of the pipeline. 72% of the metal had been eaten away. the pipeline in new mexico was over 50 years old, 30 inches in diameter, the same as the one here in san bruno. the possible cause is called microbiological influence corrosion. the report came out in the san francisco chronicle this morning. basically microbes that thrive, go undetected in a tiny pool of stagnant water in a pipeline and start eating away on the metal causing it to corrode. pg&e told state regulators last year there was ongoing concern about the potential for internal corrosion on the 46-mile pipeline runs from san

the oil began to leak. the u.s. coast guard says it will resume its search later this morning for a woman that placed a may day call in the waters off the coast of tiburon. they conducted searches from the richmond san rafael bridge and to angel island but failed to locate the caller. officials also broadcast alerts to marine traffic in the area. >> it's now 5:05. investigators will resume their search for a fifth day this morning looking for a body that may have been dumbed at a pittsburgh landfill. they're focussed on a one-acre stretching hoping to find clues that led to the whereabouts of frederick salas. he may be the fifth victim in the string of murders all at the hands of valdemoro. police say so far the tedious search has yielded just one clue and it's not much. >> the only thing they have found is a piece of letterhead that had a hercules dress but it's not related to this case. >> investigators are searching in the right area where trash from hercules was dumped. possibly the same trash from the business park where valued marrow once worked and where the car he had was abandone
on this thursday. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. the best known name in toddler toys is announcing a mastiff recall including everything from tricycles to high chairs. jenelle joins us with more. >> eric, if you have a child five years old, you probably have some fisher price product in your home. just the past hour the company announced this massive recall, 10 million products. the recall includes nearly 1 million fisher price high chairs with pegs on the back legs for tray storage. toddlers have cut themselves on the pegs. seven of them needed stitches. also recalled, 7 million tricycles including hot wheels, barbie free spirit and tough tyke. ten children have flipped and hurt themselves. >> things that protrude from a toy which children can fall and hurt themselves need to be removed from toys so that they don't pose a hazard. >> also recalled small inflatable balls found on play gyms and little people cars because the wheels can detack and pose a choking hazard. for those toys, they will need to be replaced. you can contact fisher price at 1-800-432-5427. kristen
tuesday. >> we welcome frances back on this back to work tuesday. thank you for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. back to school, the school year's just getting started and one bay area school district is talking closure. the fate of three richmond schools will be decided oddly enough by the city council. terry mcsweeney is live at kennedy high school which is on the chopping block. terry? >> yes. three schools, 900 students, dozens of faculty members will all be impacted by tonight's decision. the city council is being asked to provide $1.5 million to keep kennedy high, grant and the elementary school open. the school district like so many others have been hit hard by state budget cuts, turning to the city for money now, also declining enrollment. the city of richmond does have money, money coming in from the next ten years from a utility tax settlement. >> i feel a small part of that money be allocated towards keeping schools open. >> i can count on one hand probably the number of high schools in the east bay that have closed in the last 50 or 60 years. it's not comm
. it will be breezy but the winds switching around to a northerly component and then off shore bringing us the warm effort day out of the next three which will be labor day and on our coast. elsewhere around the bay and much cooler weather tuesday and wednesday. our current visible satellite picture shows the fog went across the bay into some of our east bay neighborhoods clearing around the delta and this morning you have the delta breeze. you will see the range of temperatures from the 60s and 80s around the bay. a pleasant day here. tropical storm esh89 continues to lose speed and strength. 70 miles an hour right now and pulling out of new england. the rain, it is lashing parts of nova scotia and still see a couple inches of rain there but sunny and more comfortable weather for most of the eastern seaboard. back home we'll see the clouds hug the coast today. an area of low pressure passes to the east of us. then as that happens, we have higher pressure building in. northerly winds sweeping the fog away. breezy tomorrow, but then we'll see the numbers skyrocket on monday for much warmer weather.
